Episode Notes

Best-selling author, Bible teacher and top-podcaster Phylicia Masonheimer shares about that ONE conversation a college professor gave her during a time in life when she was struggling to make sense of circumstances. Tune in to hear how this conversation not only helped her identify who to marry, but it also gave her a new way of looking at life, opening the door for her to launch what I like to call a “generation-impacting ministry!”

More about this Episode:

Anyone who has ever met Phylicia Duran Masonheimer knows she is a smart and engaging woman, but she’s also filled with purpose, conviction and tremendous integrity. We were colleagues a number of years ago and I had a bird’s eye view to her courtship and eventual engagement to Josh, who is now her husband. She was, as people like to say, “quite the catch!”

In this episode, Phylicia shares about a conversation with a college professor who spoke a word of truth to her, and in doing so, it opened her eyes to the possibility of what could be. And while I imagine this professor remembers Phylicia, and perhaps even remembers having coffee with her, it’s likely the conversation was one he’s forgotten because professors have lots of conversations, with lots of students, about lots of different things.

While on the surface, it looked like a conversation about finding “the right man” for Phylicia, it was actually a much deeper conversation. It was a conversation that has shaped Phylicia’s relationships, the call on her life, and the work she does on a daily basis to equip women to be every day theologians. And let me tell you: The call on her life is big. I couldn’t be more proud of the work she’s doing. I believe her work will transform generations of people from luke-warm to spiritually-alive in their faith.

Oh that all professors could speak life into their students’ hearts like this one did to Phylicia!

Episode Notes

What happens when you’re living the life you thought you were supposed to live, but you realize it’s not really the life you’re meant to live? This is the situation in which Jesse Eubanks found himself—except it wasn’t just any life he was living, it was a life completely dedicated to Godworking with the homeless, the poor, the addicts … the really, really needy. But for a group of men who were willing to ask him hard questions and a therapist who was willing to help uncover the not-so-easy answers, Jesse wouldn’t have the incredible life he has today. And the work he does today is so good, so important, and still so completely dedicated to God.

More about this Episode:

Today’s guest is Jesse Eubanks, and what a delight our conversation was. Today, Jesse leads a non-profit organization, Love Thy Neighbor, which trains and equips individuals to minister and serve the poor in modern culture. He’s also the host of The EnneaCast Podcast where he explores personality and relationships through the lens of the Enneagram.

But, while the work he’s doing today is really, really remarkable, it hasn’t always been like this. In fact, it was one question that turned into that ONE conversation that changed everything for Jesse. One question he didn’t want to answer but when he finally answered, it prompted massive change. I mean, when you yell out to a room full of men that you’re angry at God, you kinda gotta change.

Our conversation, and Jesse’s story, remind me of the importance of living responsibility with accountability inside community. It’s one thing to say we are accountable but if we aren’t living responsibly with this accountability, what good is it? Jesse had a choicehe could hide behind the accountability and never answer the question; or he could be responsible and experience the consequences. For Jesse, the consequence of being honest and responsible meant he had to face more questions and find more answers, but the fruit of this conversation and hard inner work is why he can do what he does today. Amazing how that works, huh?

In talking with Jesse, I’m inspired by the work he does today. While Love Thy Neighbor is local to Louisville, KY, it has global reach and Kingdom impact. His newest book, How We Relate, helps us break down the walls we tend to hide behind because we don’t want anyone to know about our true self. But when we are willing to embrace our own truth, and the truth of others, filtered through the Truth of Christ, we find authentic and fulfilling living. It’s this authentic living that longs for community, builds community and creates even more community-builders. And this, in a nutshell, is what that ONE conversation has allowed Jesse to do day-after-day.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Episode Notes

How are you, really?—a question few of us are willing to ask, and I suspect even fewer of us are willing to answer. In this episode, Lauren Elise Rogers shares about that ONE conversation that not only changed her life, but saved her life. Lauren grew up in the “Purity Culture” and had no idea that her decade-long marriage was not only bad, it was downright abusive – yet, she believed this was normal, dare I say, “Biblical.” In this episode we discuss the importance of listening to “promptings,” being willing to do the hard work on yourself, and the beauty of being the one who actually gives the gift of a life-altering conversation.

More about this Episode:

But what I do know is that from a distance, I watched as Lauren’s seemingly normal marriage crumbled, her life was completely uprooted and wrecked, and then … like a caterpillar, she transitioned into something so beautiful, strong and … brave.

Lauren shares the back-story of being raised in the “Purity Culture,” the impact this had on who she chose to marry, and the years of abuse she endured as a result of the belief, “this is how it’s supposed to be.”

As jarring as the details of her marriage are, the conversation that saved her life is far more tender. The gift of this conversation not only saved Lauren’s life, but put her on a new path, a trajectory of healing, re-birthing, and coming into a season of hope … and life.

I left my time with Lauren with two key takeaways:

  1. We all have promptings, that inner voice that prompts us to say or do something we might not normally choose to do. We can choose to listen or ignore these promptings. When we act upon those promptings, we are oftentimes a facilitator of change; but when we ignore them… well, who knows what happens?
  2. To ask someone, “How Are You, Really?” is one of the greatest gifts we could ever give. But to answer this question may be one of the hardest yet healthiest gifts we ever receive.

Episode Notes

Psychiatrist Alex Wills, MD, was given that ONE conversation while in residency; it so profoundly impacted him that it became the foundation for the life-changing work he does today—Radical Emotional Acceptance. That simple and poignant conversation prompted Dr. Wills to develop a method that helps patients heal from issues ranging from past traumas to interpersonal struggles in their marriage – everyone needs to learn about and implement the practice of Radical Emotional Acceptance! In this episode, Dr. Wills shares about that ONE conversation, why it was so life-changing for him, and how critical the conversation was for the work he does today.

More about this Episode:

My conversation with Dr. Alex Wills was so enlightening to me, and his story is a reminder that ONE conversation can change the course of someone’s career – or in this case, it shaped his career.

In this episode, you’ll hear about how that ONE conversation during his residency (in Hawaii, nonetheless) shifted his entire career from traditional psychiatry and psychotherapy to an innovative approach of identifying and accepting our emotions.

We discuss:

  1. The relationship between emotions and colors
  2. Why Dr. Wills believes emotions should be a 6th sense
  3. How to get in touch with your emotions, even if you (or your spouse) is overcome with logic
  4. The wisdom of sitting with your emotions
  5. How to learn and ask questions of our emotions so we can move forward
  6. When to express gratitude for your emotions

At the end of the episode, I share my own experience implementing some of Dr. Wills’ teachings, including a tender moment I had with my daughter who was dealing with some heavy emotions.

Check out his website, radicalemotionalacceptance.com where you can find his new book through his site, or via Amazon.

Episode Notes

Have you ever considered yourself to be “teachable?” In this episode, my friend Carrie Wright shares about that ONE conversation that changed everything for her — and how the gift of that conversation set Carrie up for a career — and a life — she would have never imagined. Listen in as Carrie shares about her boss and mentor, Barb Sherman, who poured into her, modeled true servant leadership and challenged Carrie to become teachable.

More about this Episode:

My guest today is someone I “met” before I’d physically met her! She and her husband were neighbors of my parents’ and they had a son who was about 5 months older than ours. When Carrie’s son outgrew his clothes, she put them in her yard sale, and my mom stopped by and bought them! She called me (mom was in VA, I was in TN) to tell me about this sweet new mom she’d met, and how she was selling the baby clothes and they were all packaged neatly in a ziploc bag – freshly laundered!

Shortly after, Carrie became my own neighbor, colleague and friend. One of our most “bonding” experiences came when I stood with her at 3 am and watched her house go up in flames. I’ve watched Carrie’s life crumble to literal ashes, and I’ve also watched it be re-built and re-born.

But I never knew until this interview about that ONE conversation that changed her life. Her boss and mentor gave her a list of reasons she didn’t hire her – she wasn’t the smartest one, the most qualified or the most talented … she was the most teachable.

And it was that conversation that taught Carrie to embrace a posture of teachability — from coaching college students on careers to opening new Chick-Fil-A restaurants to consulting with corporations on strategy, people and hospitality, Carrie is an example of someone who now understands the importance of being a lifelong learner.

Episode Notes

Have you ever wondered if the words you give to children stick with them for years to come? I’m here to tell you – they do. My dear cousin, Karen (Whaley) Cook, shares about the powerful, life-changing conversation an elementary school teacher gave her when she was 11 or 12. These words became an anchor for her life – in the really good years, and the unbelievably hard ones, too. In addition to being a neuroscientist, Karen is a sufferer of mental illness. She talks candidly about her challenges in this interview, and about how that one conversation from her childhood has kept her grounded in the promise that God has a plan for her life.

More about this Episode:

This is a very personal episode for me because I interview my cousin, Karen (Whaley) Cook, and she opens up about her multiple mental health diagnoses, which were misdiagnosed for twenty years. But she also shares about that one conversation a teacher from elementary school gave her on a random day and in a community where she only lived for 18 months. That one conversation has anchored Karen during the really good years, and the dark ones, too.

I’ve known Karen all of her life, she’s eleven months younger than me, and I love her like a sister. She has always been an achiever, a perfectionist, and a person with impeccable integrity. She’s also brilliant. She studied neuroscience and spent her career studying molecules in the brain – the same molecules that are impacted by mental illness. When her career was soaring, she was suffering; she chose to give up her career so she could save her life.

My favorite quote from Karen’s interview is, “The pain in my life doesn’t define me, but it does refine me.” Isn’t that a mindset shift from what the world tells us?

I also love that she shares what we can learn about the body of Christ from whales, and how she uses her mental illnesses to remind people that they are here for a purpose and for a plan.

Karen is available for public speaking events, and she’s a wonderful resource for anyone who is looking to understand what mental illness can do to both an individual as well as family members. She loves talking with family members to give them perspective about what their loved one is going through and experiencing. If you’d like to connect with Karen, you are welcome to contact me at [email protected] for more information.
