Hi, I'm Laurie!
I grew up in a pastor’s home and you know what they say about pastors’ families, right? Pastor’s families live in a “glass box.” As a young girl, I learned that performing and making sure everything looked perfect was how I was to live. This belief served me well when I was in music competitions, theater productions and Honor Society.
But when I was a freshman in college, while sitting at the local TCBY with a group of friends, a guy casually made the comment, “You’re the fakest person I’ve ever met, Laurie.”
Stunned and shattered, I returned to the dorm to ask my roommate what in the world our friend had meant. “You know, Laurie, you’re not real, you’re fake. You aren’t quite in touch with reality, you’re always putting on a show, and come across a little disingenuous.”
That night, I made a commitment to myself and to the world: I would become, “The realest person anyone has ever met.”
This one conversation changed the course of my life forever. And it’s not just changed my own life, it’s changed the lives of the countless people who have been a part of my life – my husband, children, co-workers, neighbors, friends.
For years, I’ve shared life-changing conversations with people over coffee, meals, or even on the phone. These conversations have been filled with such meaningful lessons that I’ve applied to my life and when I repeat them, I find that the person on the other end is also changed, just as I was when I was first given the gift of the conversation. Realizing the impact I could have by sharing my conversations is why I’ve launched this podcast.
Through the years, I’m grateful my professional career has varied – from book publishing, media relations, and promoting box office films to owning my own clothing store, running large-scale events and leading leaders of teams. Each of these careers has allowed me to press more into the real Laurie, and has allowed even more people to be impacted by that one conversation years ago at TCBY.
I consider Nashville to be my home, but today my family lives at the base of the Wasatch Mountain range in Salt Lake City. I’m a #twinmom, met my husband on e-Harmony.com, and can’t believe my son will be driving soon! In addition to consulting on publishing projects and pursuing creative entrepreneurship, those just support my love for sitting knee-to-knee with people who are craving and cultivating rich conversations that change lives. I hope you’ll join me!
