Episode Notes

What happens when you’re living the life you thought you were supposed to live, but you realize it’s not really the life you’re meant to live? This is the situation in which Jesse Eubanks found himself—except it wasn’t just any life he was living, it was a life completely dedicated to Godworking with the homeless, the poor, the addicts … the really, really needy. But for a group of men who were willing to ask him hard questions and a therapist who was willing to help uncover the not-so-easy answers, Jesse wouldn’t have the incredible life he has today. And the work he does today is so good, so important, and still so completely dedicated to God.

More about this Episode:

Today’s guest is Jesse Eubanks, and what a delight our conversation was. Today, Jesse leads a non-profit organization, Love Thy Neighbor, which trains and equips individuals to minister and serve the poor in modern culture. He’s also the host of The EnneaCast Podcast where he explores personality and relationships through the lens of the Enneagram.

But, while the work he’s doing today is really, really remarkable, it hasn’t always been like this. In fact, it was one question that turned into that ONE conversation that changed everything for Jesse. One question he didn’t want to answer but when he finally answered, it prompted massive change. I mean, when you yell out to a room full of men that you’re angry at God, you kinda gotta change.

Our conversation, and Jesse’s story, remind me of the importance of living responsibility with accountability inside community. It’s one thing to say we are accountable but if we aren’t living responsibly with this accountability, what good is it? Jesse had a choicehe could hide behind the accountability and never answer the question; or he could be responsible and experience the consequences. For Jesse, the consequence of being honest and responsible meant he had to face more questions and find more answers, but the fruit of this conversation and hard inner work is why he can do what he does today. Amazing how that works, huh?

In talking with Jesse, I’m inspired by the work he does today. While Love Thy Neighbor is local to Louisville, KY, it has global reach and Kingdom impact. His newest book, How We Relate, helps us break down the walls we tend to hide behind because we don’t want anyone to know about our true self. But when we are willing to embrace our own truth, and the truth of others, filtered through the Truth of Christ, we find authentic and fulfilling living. It’s this authentic living that longs for community, builds community and creates even more community-builders. And this, in a nutshell, is what that ONE conversation has allowed Jesse to do day-after-day.

I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!
